Vivian Lumzee And The New Born

May 28 2011

Vivian Lumzee gave birth to a bouncing baby girl in mid May 2011 at MCF Yatta.Vivian Lumzee is a Turkana girl rescued from a street family in the streets of Kitale in June 1997 in very poor health and malnourishment. The single mother had five children from different marriages. According to reports gathered, she is the only surviving child in the family. The mother is mentally incapacitated and this is believed to have been the prime cause of the death of the children coupled with the inhuman and wretched living conditions at Kipsongo slums.
On many days, Vivian could accompany the mother to go and beg on the streets. The risks of sexual abuse, lack of food and contracting diseases became the daily things she dreaded but could not avoid.
It was in this dire need of care and support that she was rescued on the 8th of June, 1997 by Mully Children’s Family from Kipsongo slums in a very poor state of health as the mother did not feed her. She had been neglected due to poverty and the mental state of her mother.
On her rescue, she was accorded care and protection as well as medical care and all other basic needs to enable her recover from the ailments she had contracted. Before her rescue, she had never attended school. She enrolled at MCF school where she began her education and progressed on well.
Vivian sat for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education in 2009 at MCF Ndalani. She enrolled in grade nine at MCF Yatta but transferred back to MCF Ndalani after a short while. Upon her arrival at MCF Ndalani, she said that she did not want to continue with her formal education and that she wanted to join vocational training because she felt inadequate pursuing secondary education. According to her, education is one big challenge and there was no way she could learn. She said that she is good at hair dressing and is eager to join the training to benefit more. On being transferred to MCF Yatta vocational training, Lumzee ran away from MCF on the 18th of April, 2010. Frantic efforts were made in searching for her. Reports were made to all the necessary authorities including the area administrative authorities and the police.
Meanwhile, Vivian was staying in Nairobi with a girl that she met in the streets. It was at that time that she met a young man with whom she conceived. She decided to join her mentally ill mother in Kipsongo slums after the young man discovered that she was pregnant and proposed an abortion. She had no peace in Kipsongo slums. This made her to return to MCF in November 2010. On her return, she was diagnosed with an STI alongside being pregnant. She was given the proper medication to correct the condition as well as underwent counseling sessions.
She rejoined the MCF Yatta vocational training program in December 2010. The hardship that she had experienced during the 7 months that she was away from MCF motivated her to work harder to become a competent hair dressing and beauty therapy student. She has come to appreciate the benefits received from MCF including care, protection, access to basic needs, medical care and education.
