Jackson Kimende Kariuki and Peter Alimon Lokolonyoi graduated from the African Nazarene University on the Friday, 18th of June this year with honors degrees.
Jackson and Peter have both gone through Mully Children’s Family since they were rescued at a very young age. They went through MCF primary and secondary schools performing excellently where they attained university entry grades. They joined the African Nazarene University in 2006 and proceeded on well till their graduation.
Jackson, born in 1985, is an orphan and a former street boy brought up in a single motherhood family. The mother never got married although she bore other children beside Jackson. The mother disagreed with her parents in Timboroa, her birthplace and left for Eldoret where she engaged in commercial sex work and selling of illicit alcohol to earn a living in Langas slum.
With this kind of livelihood where the children lacked the benefit of experiencing a father’s love, they left for the streets at a very tender age. The mother could spend nights away from the family leaving the children alone and vulnerable to the hostilities of a family with no parental care.
Jackson got involved in all manner of ills. He sniffed glue, smoked bhang and cigarettes, snatched people’s things and was not spared by the police or the general public who inflicted on him all manner of injuries and beating. Life on the streets became so unbearable for the children but with no hope for a better future. He was rescued by MCF in 1992 where he has accessed all the basic needs.
Jackson has graduated from the university with a First Class Honors Bachelor of Commerce degree, Accounting option where he was the best student in the class.
Peter Alimon Lokolonyoi was born on the 4th of February, 1986, the first born in a family of two. He is a destitute former street child from a broken family of two. He was rescued in 1995 after becoming a drug addict and a contemporary fellow of the street gang at the age of ten years. He is a victim of disgruntled parents who separated in 1994. Prior to separation, the family lived in Kipkaren slums in Eldoret town. The children had never had the opportunity to enjoy life at its best as they lacked most of the necessities of life. The family lived from hand to mouth.
The only breadwinner was the father who worked as a night guard. However, his alcoholic addiction denied the family the bread they seriously yearned for. He used to spend the better part of his income on alcohol. The parents constantly had rivalry and the father always issued threats to the mother. Peter’s mother was unable to stomach this state of affairs any more and left with the younger son leaving Peter behind with the drunkard father. The father took the advantage of the situation and married another wife with whom they begot other children.
The absence of the mother and in the hands of an uncaring father, impacted most negatively on the life of the young boy. He lacked adequate food, health care, clothing and education. The situation was aggravated by the departure of the mother. The father, with his inherent addiction to alcohol, neglected Peter leading him to look for solace elsewhere. Being in the slum close to a city, the street became the ultimate destination. On the streets, he engaged in all manner of delinquent behavior. He was involved in stealing from non-suspecting people, smoking bhang, sniffing glue and taking of illicit brew.
Peter was rescued by MCF in 1995 where he has accessed all the basic needs. He graduated from the university with Honors Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science where he was the second best student in the class.
These two young men are now full of hope as they look forward to building the nation and help many other needy people courtesy of MCF.
