Planting in the open fields at MCF farm at Yatta has been going on in earnest mid this year with more land getting cleared for more
planting. Farm workers employed from the community have been busy on the farms to ensure that the work goes on successfully. It is notable that MCF has been offering massive employment opportunities to the community members as well as providing housing facilities for a majority of the farm workers.
The planting follows a great harvest on the open fields where the yield of maize as well as vegetables was impressive over the last season.
Meanwhile, harvesting of French beans in the greenhouses has been going on in Ndalani and Yatta. The products are used for consumption by the children within the MCF homes as well as for export and for sale locally. The grade one French beans are exported to European countries through an exporter, the Indu Farm, where the payments are made at the gate price, as the farm manager explains. The proceeds are used to support the operations within MCF. The production of other items including eggs and chicken has been an all time high where these items are sold locally to individuals and organizations. We look forward to increased supplies and partnering with more buyers of our products which will go a long way in supporting the children under MCF umbrella.
We thank God for the conducive weather that has made farming successful and has greatly boosted crop yields over the last half year. This comes at a time when the country was adversely affected by drought last year, negatively affecting agricultural activities. The agricultural projects as well as the climate change mitigation projects among others have been performing relatively well over the last ten months, thus proving the efforts worthwhile. MCF has established a large tree nursery containing a variety of tree seedlings and more than a million tree seedlings have been distributed to various parts of the country. We hope to produce more tree seedlings for distribution to many different parts of the country.
MCF has been in partnership with governmental officials including the provincial administrative officers in Yatta and the neighboring districts among others in an effort to ensure that tree seedlings are distributed and planted in as many areas as possible.
